Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov wants 2009 to be a "decisive year" for agriculture. Speaking at a cabinet meeting, the president outlined "mandatory" reforms that he insisted must stimulate agricultural production.
"The State provides for the development of our vast agricultural resources, and the time has come achieve real impact," the state news agency quoted the President saying on January 30. Berdymukhamedov went on to say that he would like to see "healthy" competition between public and private interests in the agriculture sector. Increased agricultural production would help boost exports, Berdymukhamedov added.
"Competition will benefit the people, ordinary consumers," Berdymukhamedov said.
