KYRGYZ PRESIDENT PRIORITIZES REDUCTION OF POVERTY

BISHKEK. Feb 15 (Interfax) - Kyrgyz President Askar Akayev has made
the fight against poverty a top priority in Kyrgystan over the next 10
years.
A program for Kyrgystan's comprehensive development is being
formed, Akayev said at an international seminar on Tuesday.
Representatives of the U.N., OSCE, World Bank and IMF are attending the
seminar, which was organized by the Kyrgyz government.
The program will be implemented as a World Bank project between
2001 and 2010.
It is aimed at curbing poverty, increasing social protection and
attaining stable economic growth. The program is expected to boost the
efficiency of state management and legal reforms.
All branches should focus on overcoming poverty as over 55% of the
population are now living at the poverty level, he said. Akayev linked
the problem to the current transitional period in Kyrgyz history.
