FT investigation on Kazakhstan

Dec 3, 2020

On December 3, 2020, Eurasianet published a blog about an investigative report published that same day by the Financial Times. The FT report, based on leaked documents and emails reviewed by the newspaper, contained allegations of financial improprieties involving a relative of former Kazakhstani president Nursultan Nazarbayev.

Lawyers for the Nazarbayev relative subsequently sent a legal complaint to the FT, claiming that the allegations contained in the FT report were erroneous and the relative in question had no direct connection to any corrupt dealings depicted in the piece. The FT updated its original article to reflect the information provided by the lawyers, including denials of any wrongdoing.

On October 19, 2021, Eurasianet also received a legal complaint from the relative’s lawyers. On November 3, 2021, Eurasianet removed our summary of the FT's investigative article.
