South Ossetia: Political Peace Deal with Opposition Kaput

Like anyone else, looks like breakaway South Ossetia's onetime de-facto presidential hopeful Alla Jioyeva made a few New Year's resolutions for 2012. Resolution #1: Don't put up with any perceived funny business.

In December, Jioyeva backed off street protests over scuttled results from the run-off of South Ossetia's de-facto presidential election that appeared to be in her favor. The deal, brokered by Moscow, led to the resignation of longtime de-facto leader Eduard Kokoity and assorted entourage members. Another de-facto presidential vote has been scheduled for March this year.

But on January 18, after claiming that the territory's ruling establishment had not made good on its promises, Jioyeva announced she's walking out on the deal.
