MTS One Step Behind
The advertising slogan of the Russian cellular company MTS “MTS is a step ahead” does not quite correspond to reality in Turkmenistan. Turkmenistan Initiative for Human Rights questioned 30 mobile phone users in Ashgabat to discover that only one of them used MTS services, while the rest preferred Turkmenistan’s local operator Altyn Asyryn. During MTS’s two year absence from the Turkmen market, nearly all its clients moved to Altyn Asyryn’s services. As there is little difference in the rates and ranges of the services offered by the two companies, few choose to go back to their MTS service, which requires changing their phone number. Many hope that MTS will be able to provide higher speed Internet at lower prices, which would rationalize going back to MTS’ service. MTS is trying to re-capture its share of the Turkmen market.
