On December 22, 1991, the world map changed forever when a document signed at a dacha in Belarus did away with the Soviet Union. In its wake, the imploding empire left a geopolitical disorder that continues to seethe and foment to this day. Once the diplomatic face of the Soviet Union, 83-year-old former Georgian President Eduard Shevardnadze, now living in retirement in Tbilisi, spoke with Eurasianet about the events that led to the empire’s collapse and what the future might hold for the post-Soviet world.
