Turkmenistan: Berdymukhamedov Mulls Russian Hi-Tech Deals

Dec 9, 2009

President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov has met with the head of Rostekhnologii, the Kremlin-controlled entity tasked with marketing high technology developed by the Russian defense sector.

Berdymukhamedov and Sergei Chemezov "paid a special attention to the introduction of new technologies which could help successfully implement socio-economic reforms," a report on the Altyn Asyr television channel stated on December 8.

Rostekhnologii was formed in 2007 by then-president Vladimir Putin. Chemezov is the former boss of Rosoboronexport, the Russian arms export agency. He is a close associate of Putin's from when they were both KGB agents in the former East Germany.

Turkmenistan bought a "small batch" of T-90S tanks at a cost of $30 million in July. More contracts are believed to be in pipeline.
