Migration issues discussed in Ashgabat
Ashgabat hosted a seminar with the participation of a delegation from the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to review the program activities of the IOM in Turkmenistan. The IOM Regional Programme Manager for Eastern Europe and Central Asia, Mark Richmond, attended the seminar.

Turkmenistan’s Parliament and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) held a roundtable to review international experience and national approaches to governance and strategic planning. The meeting was held within the framework of the joint project of UNDP and the Mejlis of Turkmenistan, entitled “Parliamentary Development Support Programme.”

President of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko is visiting Turkmenistan on November 4-5 to meet with President Berdymukhamedov one-on-one and are expected to sign a number of bilateral documents.

President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov and President of the Republic of Turkey Abdullah Gul spoke on the telephone. Berdymukhamedov congratulated his Turkish counterpart and his country on the Republic Day of Turkey, and congratulated Abdullah Gul on his birthday. Abdullah Gul invited Berdymukhamedov to visit Turkey.

“We highly appreciate Turkmenistan's leading role in its inclination towards achieving peace and prosperity in the region, especially the deep commitment of Turkmenistan towards the issue of Afghanistan's development,” US President Barack Obama wrote to Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov in a letter sent on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of Turkmenistan's independence. The US President also expressed hope “for the further cooperation and strengthening of the countries' partnership in the future.”

“Russian-Turkmen relations based on the good traditions of friendship and mutual respect are developing in the spirit of strategic partnership,” wrote Russian President Vladimir Putin in a letter to his Turkmen counterpart Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov, sent on the occasion of the 22nd anniversary of Turkmenistan's independence. Currently a visit by the Russian president to Turkmenistan is being coordinated through diplomatic channels. Cooperation in the gas sector will likely be the main issue on the agenda of the talks between the two presidents.

The European Union is imposing the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline project on Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Monday, speaking at Don State Technical University, ITAR-TASS reported. "Our European partners are imposing the Trans-Caspian gas pipeline on Azerbaijan and Turkmenistan, disregarding the fact that such issues should be resolved between the coastal nations rather than in Brussels," Lavrov said.
