Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov is expected to visit Uzbekistan in the near future. He may also be accompanied by Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Deputy Prime Minister Sergei Ivanov, according to a report distributed by the opposition news site Uzmetronom.com.
Moscow's newly appointed ambassador to Uzbekistan is due to arrive in Tashkent in the next few days, according to the Kremlin's official website. Speaking after a meeting with Ambassador Vladimir Tyurdenev on December 11, Russian President Dmitry Medvedev described Uzbekistan as Russia's "largest partner" in Central Asia.
"This state is dynamically developing and the success of the Russian policy in Central Asia, in many respects, depends on how good and full-fledged our relations, our economic relations are with this country's leadership. Therefore, I would like you promptly assume your responsibilities," said Medvedev is quoted as telling Tyurdenev.
Uzmetronom.com speculates the high ranking visit led by Lavrov and Putin may coincide with Tyurdenev's arrival.
